How to Help Kids Overcome a Move

really hard for kids to adapt to, as they are leaving everything they know and find comfortable for the unknown. We can't get around that moving is hard for both them and us, but what we can do is make it as easy on them as we possibly can. Easing this transition for your littles will make the move easier for them and in turn easier for you, so here are five things you can do to ease the burden.

  1. Let them pack a box all on their own. Giving your kids the ability to pack their own box (or boxes) gives them a sense of control and lets them know that even though they are moving, they are not leaving behind everything they know. Make sure you don't worry about how the box is packed, let them handle the whole thing all on their own. When you finally arrive at your new home, help them unpack their box right away to let them know that their stuff made it, and everything is going to be okay.
  2. Keep it playful. A move is stressful, there is virtually no way around that. What is important here is that you keep the stress on you, and do not project it onto your kids. I am by no means saying that is easy, it definitely isn't, but making the process more stressful for them will make it more stressful for you. Try to keep it as light hearted as you can, make games out of anything you can, and let your kids help you out in a fun way. Check out this article from unpakt for great ways to keep it fun during not fun times.
  3. Set their bedroom up first. This tip ties into the the first tip, and is equally as important. Giving your kids a safe haven during the move is a crucial step, so making their room a top priority needs to be near the top of your list. Unpacking their room will give them a sense of peace and prevent them from tearing through boxes trying to make your new home their own. Part of this step includes unpacking their special box and making their bed the same way you had it at your old home. Comfort is the name of the game.
  4. Talk about what you are doing. Make sure you are communicating clearly with your kids every step of the way. Tell them when you are going to rent a moving van, go get moving boxes, get the keys to your new place, etc. Keeping them in the loop makes them feel like they are more of a part of the move, and not just going along with what you want to do. Keep it very positive, letting them know the exciting new things you are going to be able to do at your new home. Check out this article from Psychology Today for more info.
  5. Have fun activities ready to go. So you're in the house now, ready to make it your new home, STOP! We know you want nothing more than to be completely unpacked and enjoying your new home, but the more important thing here is making sure your kids are enjoying it. Get their favorite books out, have a dance party in your empty room, bust out a ball to play with in the house (the only time this is allowed), or just take a walk in your new neighborhood. There are a lot of different options here, and it does not have to be anything too crazy. Check out this article from Moving.com for more info.

These are all awesome tips to make your move less painful for your littles, and thus you. Moving is hard, no doubt about it, but making sure it isn't too hard on your kids should be one of your top priorities. A bundle of gifts from Frecklebox might make it easier too.
